Are you gearing up for an exciting new chapter in a different space? Whether you’re relocating across town or venturing to a whole new city, moving houses is a thrilling adventure filled with endless possibilities. But before you dive headfirst into packing and saying your farewells to your old home, it’s essential to dot your i’s and cross your t’s. So, grab a pen and paper and let’s jot down the things to look out for before making the big move! Please note that this is my perspective as a Nigerian living in Nigeria.
1. Electricity
First things first, let’s talk power! Before you sign on the dotted line, make sure to check the electricity situation in your new abode and neighbourhood. Does your neighbourhood have a steady power supply? Are all outlets in working order? Are there no flickering lights or ominous sparks? These fundamental questions must be answered before moving to avoid regrets. Ensure you are not inheriting the previous occupant’s electricity bills. A home without electricity is like a smartphone without a charger—not ideal.
2. Security
Safety first, folks! Investigate the security measures in your new neighbourhood to ensure peace of mind for you and your loved ones. Ensure the area does not have a gang problem or robbery problem. If you come home late at night will it be safe to drive or walk home? Do not compromise on security.
3. Network Coverage
Stay connected with the world around you by checking the cellular network coverage in your home or area before you pay for that apartment. I learnt this the hard way. I found out the network reception in my house was abysmal after I had moved in. Please do not be like me. Learn from my mistakes. Tell me about the frustrations of saying hello a zillion times because the person on the other end can’t hear you clearly or buffering videos. Ensure that you’ll have seamless connectivity for all your digital endeavours.
4. Location
They say real estate is all about location, and they’re not wrong! Scope out the surroundings of your new home to ensure it’s a perfect fit for your lifestyle. Again, this is from experience. My old neighbourhood was fun and bubbly with a bustling nightlight. 9 p.m. in my new neighbourhood, and it’s like an apocalypse happened and the cars passing are the only things spared or that managed to escape. The contrast between my new place and my old place is quite sharp and I am learning to cope one day at a time. If you are about that urban life, then consider proximity to amenities like supermarkets, restaurants, clubs, hotels, parks, public transportation options, etc. A prime location can make all the difference in your daily living.
5. Serenity
The city of Lagos wears the noise pollution badge of honour. So, please do yourself a favour and look for a house in a neighbourhood with some peace and tranquillity. Your home should be an escape from the madding crowd of the city after a long day’s work.
6. Repairs
Before you make the big move, ensure that any major repairs have been and will be done by the landlord or property owner. From leaky taps to broken tiles, address any issues that may arise to ensure a smooth transition into your new home. After all, nobody wants to play DIY detective on moving day.
7. Contract Review
Last but certainly not least, review your contracts with a fine-tooth comb to avoid any surprises down the road. Whether you’re renting or purchasing, ensure that you understand the terms and conditions of your housing arrangement fully. Some landlords do not allow pets, while others are cool with it. Don’t hesitate to seek guidance from a trusted legal professional if needed—better safe than sorry.
Armed with this comprehensive checklist, you’re well-prepared to embark on your moving adventure with confidence and ease. So, dust off those packing boxes, tie up those loose ends and get ready to embrace the excitement of a new chapter in your life.
