BREAKING BARRIERS AND DRIVING CHANGE IN LEADERSHIP

Leadership is not just about rising to the top—it’s about breaking barriers, creating opportunities, and paving the way for others. My journey to executive leadership has been shaped by defining moments, bold decisions, and valuable lessons that continue to guide me today.

Women in leadership often face unique challenges, from overcoming gender biases to balancing multiple responsibilities. However, resilience, competence, and a commitment to excellence are powerful tools that help us navigate these barriers. Now, more than ever, it is crucial that women in leadership own their success, challenge limitations, and create opportunities for others.

As I reflect on my journey, I recognise that true leadership is not just about personal achievements—it’s about driving transformation in business, empowering others, and building an inclusive future for the next generation of leaders.

Women in executive roles often face unspoken biases, unequal opportunities, and the challenge of proving themselves in male-dominated spaces. However, the ability to navigate these challenges with resilience, self-belief, and strategic positioning is what sets great leaders apart.

Throughout my journey, there were times when I had to work twice as hard to gain the same level of credibility and respect as my male counterparts.

I overcame this by:

  • By focusing on delivering results. At the end of the day, performance speaks louder than perceptions.
  • By building strong networks and mentorship circles. No leader succeeds alone—women must support and uplift each other.
  • By staying adaptable and continuously innovating. The business landscape is evolving rapidly, and those who succeed embrace change.

To women who are breaking barriers and pursuing leadership, my advice is simple:

  • Know your worth. No one will advocate for you better than yourself.
  • Develop your expertise. Master your field and become indispensable.
  • Step outside your comfort zone. The best opportunities often come disguised as challenges.
  • Find your voice and use it. Speak up, contribute, and take charge of your narrative.

At UBA, we are proud to be at the forefront of this change—creating a workplace where women thrive, excel, and redefine leadership for generations to come.

Africa is rising. Women are leading. Let’s keep pushing forward.
