HOW TO PROTECT YOUR DEBIT CARD FROM FRAUD

How to protect your debit card from fraud

Summertime is here and we are outside! You know when you are “outside” there will be a lot of swiping of card because that lifestyle has to be paid for but while at it you want to be careful so that you do not lose your money to fraudsters. To protect yourself from debit card fraud, we have put together a list of Dos and Don’ts.

1. Never share your PIN

Sounds like a broken record, doesn’t it? You should never get tired of hearing this because it holds the key to your funds. The moment your PIN is compromised, your card becomes susceptible to fraud. Never store your PIN anywhere either. You might be saying, “But I forget things easily”. Think of what will happen if the device gets stolen and the thief gains access to your PIN. Fraudsters come up with ingenious ways constantly to defraud you of your money and one of their best tricks is to get you to disclose your PIN.

2. Go paperless

Request for E-statements of your account. This way you can prevent sensitive details from getting into the wrong hands but if you are more comfortable with hardcopies, keep them safe and shred the ones you no longer need.

3. Be conscious of your surroundings

When you are inputting your PIN or any other sensitive information, make sure the information is not in the view of any other person but you. Give or demand some space if someone is too close for comfort.

4. Beware of phishing scams

Always double-check that website link before clicking on it. www.ubagroup.com and  www.ubɑgroup.com look the same at first glance but if you look closely, you will see that letter “A” is different in both links. The authentic website address is the first one with the double-storey “a”. Fraudsters use emails like this pretending to be your bank and demand your debit card details. UBA will never ask for sensitive details via phone calls, texts, chats or emails. If you come across such interactions, they should be reported and discontinued immediately.

5. Destroy old debit cards

Don’t just throw away your expired debit cards, destroy them completely by shredding or cutting them up into small pieces before disposing of them.

6. Stay on top of your money

Subscribe to alerts so that you get notified in real time when any transaction occurs in your account. That way, you can spot suspicious activities on your account and report them ASAP! Also, check your balance and transaction history regularly.

7. Enable location tracking on your banking app

With this, your bank can spot irregular transactions that may not have been made by you.

8. Enable biometrics

Set up face or fingerprint recognition as second-level authentication on your devices to authorise transactions on your devices and to be able to log in online. This will keep your bank app impenetrable.

9. Use Secure WiFI connections

Do not connect your device to just any WIFI especially public ones for online transactions that involve sharing your card details. Fraudsters can get your information from these compromised WIFIs and defraud you that way.

At UBA, your security and convenience are important to us. That’s why our Debit Cards are designed with these in mind to help you stay one step ahead of fraudsters.
