Insights from the Tony Elumelu Foundation-World Food Programme Reception
At the recent Tony Elumelu Foundation – World Food Programme (WFP) Reception, held on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), our Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, alongside Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the WFP, made a resounding call for global collaboration to address the pressing issue of hunger. With 733 million people currently facing food insecurity worldwide, the urgency for collective action has never been greater.
Business success cannot be realised if people are hungry. There is an intrinsic link between economic prosperity and the well-being of society. It is therefore pertinent that corporations, governments, and individuals share a responsibility in supporting initiatives aimed at eradicating hunger.
This call to action resonates deeply with Tony Elumelu’s broader vision for #UNGA79, which focuses on key global priorities: economic growth, youth empowerment, and energy transition. By addressing the hunger crisis, we not only create a foundation for economic development but also empower future generations with the resources they need to thrive. This is a sentiment that Cindy McCain and other guests shared, reinforcing the critical need for a united front in tackling the global hunger crisis. The event marked a pivotal moment for stakeholders to re-commit to creating sustainable, long-term solutions that ensure access to food for all.
Together, through collaborative efforts and strategic partnerships, we can drive meaningful change. By investing in initiatives that promote food security, we can work towards a future where every person has the opportunity to succeed, free from the constraints of hunger. The message is clear: global hunger is a challenge we must tackle as one, for the benefit of all humanity. UBA has taken this challenge upon itself by contributing significantly to this cause through the Food Bank initiative championed by our CSR arm, the UBA Foundation.
