UBA FOUNDATION CELEBRATES THE AFRICAN CHILD; HOSTS READING SESSION

Education is critical
for development and helps lay the foundations for social well-being, economic
growth and security, gender equality and peace.

The Corporate Social Responsibility arm of the UBA
Group, UBA Foundation, today in celebration of The Day of the African Child, brought together students from various
secondary schools in Lagos to create the consciousness of the importance of
reading by engaging them in a reading exercise.
The event was held
at the UBA House.

The students were educated
on various issues, ranging from financial literacy, the importance of a reading
culture and nation building.
Schools present at
the event include Akande Dahunsi Memorial High School, Lagos; Government Senior
College, Maroko, Aunty Ayo International School Ikoyi and Wahab Folawiyo Senior
High School, Ikoyi to mention a few.

The Day of the
African Child has been celebrated on June 16 every year since 1991, when it was
first initiated by the OAU Organisation of African Unity, honouring those who
participated in the Soweto Uprising in 1976 on that day. It also raises
awareness of the continuing need for improvement of the education provided to
African children.
In her welcome address, the Group Head, Human Resources, Mrs Patricia Aderibigbe
educated the students on the UBA Foundation key three pillars: Education,
Empowerment and Environment.

She explained how the
UBA Foundation is helping rekindle the dwindling reading and literacy culture
amongst African youths. And how the foundation continues to contribute positively
to the development of African youth, especially in the area of education.
The Chief Credit
Officer, UBA Africa, Mr. Franklin Erebor also addressed the students briefly on
financial literacy and the need to plan for the future.

After the speeches,
there was a reading session where the management staff read to the students and
engaged them in reading a number of passages from select reading materials.

The students also took turns to read.

The students were
rewarded for their eagerness to learn and also charged to continue reading to
improve themselves for the greater good of Africa.

After the reading session, the students asked questions which were answered by the management staff.

The events came to an end with a photo session
and refreshments afterwards.
The students were happy and thanked UBA for encouraging
them to be the best they can be.
