Winners emerge in UBA Ghana National Essay Competition

UBA Ghana, on
Monday, 24 December 2014, announced the winners of its maiden National Essay
Competition.  Paulina Mensah Boadiwaa, a
17-year-old form two student of the Wesley Girls High School emerged the
overall winner of the competition going home with a scholarship package GHS
17,700.00, a laptop and a certificate.

 

 
She emerged winner
from the final shortlist of 12 students from the 650 entries received for the
maiden edition of the UBA Foundation National Essay Competition in Ghana.
 
The first-runners
up was Makafui Ama Tse Esther of Mawuli Senior High School who won a
scholarship package of  GHS 12,390.00
while the third position went to Dorcas Nuku Darko a student of the Keta Senior
High School who also won a scholarship package of  GHS 7,080.00. Both winners also went home
with a laptop.
 
Each of the 12
finalists received a laptop to help them in the pursuit of their education.
 
Boadiwaa Mensah,
the winner of the competition, expressed her happiness at winning the
competition saying the scholarship will help her pursue her ambition of
becoming a medical doctor.
 
Honourable Samuel
Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s deputy Minister of Education, who attended the event,
praised UBA Foundation for organizing the competition. He  pledged Ghana Education Service’ support to
the Competition, encouraging the students to continue to improve their  reading and writing skills,  as there is are huge prospects in literature. 
 
“I am hoping one of
you here will l emerge as Ghana’s first Nobel Prize winner in literature” He
said.
 
Also speaking at
the event, Ijeoma Aso, Managing Director of UBA foundation, the Corporate and
Social Responsibility arm of the UBA Group, explained that the scholarship
packages would be put in a trust fund for the winners and disbursed to them as
soon as they gain admission into a university of their choice anywhere in
Africa.
 
“The money is
dedicated to the education of the three finalists. Once they get your admission
letter we would disburse the money to them” she said.
 
Ms Aso, however,
warned the three winners against indulging in social vices because the
“scholarship would be canceled if a report is made that any of you is not fully
focused on your studies but engaged in actions that will bring disgrace to your
families and our institution”.
 

 

She also called on
the remaining nine finalists to raise their heads high and be proud to have
been shortlisted.
