UBA has over the years been a recipient of awards and recognition for pioneering innovation in the African banking sector.

  • UBA was the first among international banks to be registered under Nigerian Law in 1961
  • UBA is the first Nigerian bank to offer an IPO, following its listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 1971
  • UBA is the only sub–Saharan African bank (ex-RSA) with an office in the US (New York) – set up in 1984
  • UBA was the first Nigerian Bank to introduce a Cheque Guarantee Scheme known as UBACARD in 1986
  • UBA is the 1st and only Nigerian Bank to obtain a banking license in the Cayman Islands -1988
  • UBA has a GDR programme – 1998 (1st for a Nigerian Bank, as a means of facilitating international investor interest)
  • Best Domestic Bank in Nigeria (Euromoney 2000)
  • UBA is the 1st Nigerian Bank to obtain a banking license in Ghana – 2004
  • UBA was the first-ever successful merger in Nigerian banking history – 2005
  • UBA has received excellent credit ratings (short and long term); Global Credit Rating (SA) AA+ and A+ in 2005
  • UBA was the first to introduce the Nigerian Government Bond Index in 2006.
  • UBA is the first-ever Nigerian Bank to surpass the N1 trillion balance sheet size (including contingents) – 2006
  • Ranked Number One Bank in Nigeria (Agusto & Co, 2007)
  • UBA Introduced First Visa Dual Currency Debit Card in Nigeria.
  • UBA and MoneyGram opened the first dedicated MoneyGram location in Nigeria.
  • Successful underwriting of the first 100 percent local funding of an ExxonMobil/NNPC Joint Venture Project.
  • UBA launches Nigeria’s First Cash Deposit ATMs
  • UBA Meets NSE’s stringent corporate governance conditions to be listed on NSE Premium Board. An attestation to the Bank’s strong adherence to international best practices on corporate governance.
  • UBA is the first Pan-African bank to launch an AI-led Virtual Banking Robot
  • UBA extends Chat Banking services from Facebook Messenger to WhatsApp and Apple Business Chat in multiple countries
  • UBA has won Multiple Bank of the Year awards in different countries
  • UBA breaks the Banker Magazine Record. Wins Best Bank in Africa, Nigeria, and 12 other Subsidiaries in one year (2021)
  • UBA extends Leo Chatbox to Instagram, Google business

  • UBA doles out N22.5m in memorable Christmas draw – UBA has made good its promise of a merry yuletide to its customers as 64 of them were rewarded at its grand ‘Super Savers Promo Draw’, ending the year on a celebratory note. The lucky winners, who are now guaranteed an enjoyable festive season courtesy of UBA, cut across various account segments. A total of 23 UBA Bumper account holders smiled home with a grand prize of N2million, N1.2million, N500,000 and N100,00 respectively.

  • UBA Foundation Commemorates International Day of African Child, donates thousands of Books Across Africa

  • The 2022 edition of the UBA National Essay Competition: 15-year-old Usongobong Paul, from Akwa-Ibom State, has emerged as the overall winner of the 2022 edition of the UBA Foundation Annual National Essay Competition (NEC). Usongobong, a student of Federal Government Girls College Ikot- Obio Itong, Akwa-Ibom, beat 11 other finalists to clinch the best prize at the competition, which had over 5,000 entries from students of senior secondary schools across the country (Nigeria). The foundation as a scholarship programme is currently in its 12th year.

  • UBA Foundation held the 2022 edition of its annual food bank on December 23, 2022. where thousands of members from our host communities were offered meals, and other essentials of living.

  • UBA Listed among top 1000 global Banks by The Banker Magazine and the Bankers Africa top 100 banks.

  • UBA Braille Account Opening Form: A first-of-its-kind initiative in the Nigerian and African markets, designed specifically to cater for the financial needs of the visually impaired.

  • Braille Account Opening Forms in Kenya; UBA is the first Bank in Kenya to launch an initiative for the Visually Impaired Customers. This is in line with the Persons Living with Disability by Kenya Bankers Guidelines.

  • UBA Zambia Launched 3 new branches in 2023- Solwezi Branch May 2023, Lusaka Industrial Branch September 2023 and Chipata Branch October 2023

  • UBA Zambia in collaboration with Ossix technology launched the Yes Mobile Money Wallet. 

  • Top 5 best performing banks on Facebook by Financial Insights Zambia.
