As an institution that cares about the education, advancement and welfare of the African child in line with it’s Education scope. The UBA Foundation, today celebrated the International day of the African Child, by donating books to various Libraries across Africa to encourage a healthy reading culture amongst African children. June 16 every year, has been set aside by the United Nations as the International Day of the African Child to celebrate children in Africa and recognise the courage of students who marched for their right to better education in Soweto, South Africa.
Speaking on this special occasion, The MD/CEO of the UBA Foundation, Bola Atta, said, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has transformed life on a global scale. As we embrace our new normal, we would like to reaffirm our commitment to the education of the African Youth on the International Day of the African Child. We typically commemorate this day with a group-wide Read Africa initiative, but COVID-19 has challenged us to take on a new perspective and we were hoping to create content to that effect.
For this year’s celebration, the UBA Foundation donated over 1200 in Nigeria. In Lagos Nigeria, The MD/CEO, UBA Foundation, Bola Atta, presented books to the Ignite Africa Leadership Foundation an organization committed to help Africa Youth learn, envision, develop, and learn through several laudable initiatives like the Readers R Leaders Book Club, Book to Child Connection and the Ignite Place Library. The library is a co-working space in Ikeja that hosts numerous book clubs, poetry sessions and creative writing competitions for African youth. They also spearhead an initiative to offer book clubs in public schools in Lagos and Rivers State.
